Hotels on the beach in Miami Beach: which ones are really on the sand, and which are across the street
Which Miami Beach hotels sit right on the sand in South Beach and Mid-Beach, which are across the street, and the beach-chair and resort-fee small print.
Kurz gesagt
- The rule: Hotels on the east side of Collins Avenue back onto the sand.
- The catch: Ocean Drive hotels face Lummus Park; the beach is across the street and the park.
- Most sand: 1 Hotel South Beach: a 600-foot stretch of shoreline, four pools.
- Mid-Beach: EDITION, Faena, Fontainebleau and Eden Roc, all on Collins Ave.
- Read the fee: Loews' $50 resort fee covers beach chairs, not umbrellas.
If walking from the pool to the water matters, book on the ocean side of Collins Avenue: Loews, the Setai or 1 Hotel in South Beach, or the EDITION and Faena farther up; an Ocean Drive address puts a road and a park between you and the sand.
Bevor du gehst
- Check the map, not the photos: the hotel should sit on the ocean side of Collins Avenue
- Ocean Drive hotels face Lummus Park, so the sand is across the street and the lawn
- "Beach access" and "beach club" can mean a service across the road; ask where the chairs are
- Ask what the resort fee includes: chairs, umbrellas and towels are often split
- An oceanfront hotel does not mean an ocean-view room; book the view category
- Valet on Collins Avenue runs high; ask for the nearest public garage
Where the beachfront hotels are
In Miami Beach the beach runs along the whole east side of the island, and Collins Avenue runs parallel to it. The hotels built on the ocean side of Collins sit directly on the sand: their pool decks open onto the beach. In the tables below, the South Beach ones run from 1601 to 2341 Collins Avenue, and the Mid-Beach ones from 2901 to 4525 Collins Avenue.
Ocean Drive is different. Between 5th and 15th streets, the hotels on Ocean Drive look across the road at Lummus Park, which the tourism board describes as bordered by the Atlantic on one side and Ocean Drive on the other. You cross the street, then the lawn, then reach the sand. It is a short walk and the view is famous, but it is not a hotel on the beach.
Below are the hotels whose own sites, or the Michelin and Forbes guides, describe them as on the sand.

Fontainebleau's address comes from LIV's FAQ, since the hotel's site blocked us; we leave out its fees and room count for the same reason.

Close to the beach, not on it
Some well-known hotels sell beach time without sitting on the sand. The Betsy, at 1440 Ocean Drive, lists direct beach access among its amenities; in practice it is an Ocean Drive hotel, so you cross the road and Lummus Park. Its rooftop pool looks out to sea, per its Michelin listing.
Hotel Greystone, at 1920 Collins Avenue, runs a beach club across Collins Avenue, according to Michelin. Esmé, on Española Way, gives guests two beach chairs a day but describes itself as a short distance from the beach. Neither is a bad choice; just know you will walk.
If your hotel is on Ocean Drive, this is your beach: the park between the road and the sand, with public restrooms and changing rooms, two playgrounds, outdoor gyms, volleyball on the sand and lifeguard towers.
The tourism board lists chaise and umbrella rentals on the beach beside the park; we found no published prices.
