What Venetian Pool is
Venetian Pool is a public swimming pool built from coral rock in Coral Gables. It opened in 1924 as the Venetian Casino, and it is one of the few swimming pools in the country on the National Register of Historic Places, listed in 1981. Instead of tiles and lanes you get two waterfalls, cave-like grottos, stone bridges and Venetian-style poles.
The water is not treated pool water. It is spring water from the Biscayne Aquifer, more than 820,000 gallons of it. After closing each day the pool is drained and the water goes back to the aquifer, then it is cleaned and refilled overnight. The Miami Herald reports the water usually sits around 76 degrees, which feels cool on a hot afternoon.

City of Coral Gables, Venetian Pool page, checked October 2026
It reopened in December 2025, and winter is the question
The pool closed in October 2024 for repairs and stayed shut longer than planned. It reopened to the public on December 9, 2025, after a $6 million renovation that replaced old pump equipment, restored the poles, added a water recirculation system for the first time and redid the concession area. The Herald reported that visitors would notice few changes, because the work kept the historic look.
Normally the city closes the pool every December and January for maintenance. Because of the long renovation, the city's recreation director told the Herald in November 2025 that the pool would stay open until late 2026. The city's page does not yet give dates for a winter 2026 to 2027 closure. If you plan to go in December 2026 or January 2027, check the City of Coral Gables Venetian Pool page or call the pool at 305-460-5306 before you build a day around it.
