Best for groups who want mezcal and tacos in a big, good-looking room that stays open late on weekends. The trade-off: most cocktails sit at $16 to $18, and on music nights you'll be talking over a DJ or band.

Tortillas off the comal

Corn comes first here. The kitchen grinds nixtamal every day from organic heirloom corn imported from Mexico, and the tortillas are made by hand one at a time and sent out straight off the comal. The open kitchen lets you watch it happen. The other half of the cooking is a wood-fire grill burning oak and cherry, used for the fish, seafood and meats, and even the tortilla chips get toasted on it. Google pegs the menu as tacos and tostadas at $$ prices. The full food menu wasn't in the site text we checked, so look it over before you go if you have something specific in mind.

What to drink

A four-tiered glass case holds more than 500 mezcals and tequilas, and you can order by the sip or by the shot, which makes this a good place to taste around instead of committing to one bottle. Cocktails run $14 to $18. The Bakan Clasica margarita, with mezcal or tequila, is the cheapest at $14. The Wall mixes mezcal with pineapple and activated charcoal for $16, and El Tucanazo is a frozen mango and jalapeño drink, also $16. Micheladas are $10, and Mexican beers by the bottle or on draft are $8.

Thursday through Saturday

Hours stretch to 2 am Thursday through Saturday; the rest of the week it's noon to 11 pm. The place seats 180 across 6,000 square feet, split between the dining room and a terrace with a cacti-lined outdoor bar under inverted wood pyramid canopies, so it handles a big group better than most Wynwood spots. The restaurant says it often books DJs, jazz bands and local musicians, though no schedule is posted. A 4.6 from about 3,800 Google reviews says most people leave happy.
