Useful if you need a permit, a rental, a program answer or an accessibility request sorted with a person. There's nothing to do here for fun, and it keeps strict weekday office hours.

What this office actually runs

The Hickman Building at 275 NW 2nd Street is where the county runs a network of more than 200 public parks, plus the county beaches, marinas, golf courses, dog parks, Zoo Miami and Deering Estate. Its own highlights list rentals and permits, learn-to-swim, therapeutic recreation and inclusion programs, and tree-related services. It also maintains medians, road shoulders and causeways along county roads, busways, Metrorail and Metromover. It holds 4.8 from about 240 Google reviews, which is unusually kind for a government office. Don't put it on a sightseeing list, though: this is desks and phones, not grass.

Hours and the phone line

It's open weekdays from 8 am to 5 pm and closed Saturday and Sunday, so the weekend errand is off the table. The main line is 305-755-7800, and calling first is the smart move, because one department covers everything from summer camps to golf Patron Cards to tree issues. Ask which desk handles your question before you come downtown. For simply finding a park, the department's interactive Park Finder tool lets you filter the whole system without leaving home, which beats a trip to an office every time.

Accessibility requests

This is where the office earns its keep for a lot of families. To request materials in accessible format, sign language interpreters, CART or any other accommodation for a department program or meeting, contact Gisel Prado at 305-755-7848 at least 7 days in advance. TTY users can call 711 for the Florida Relay Service. The department also holds a Certified Autism Center designation and says the county beaches are accessible to people with disabilities. Give yourself the full week of lead time; a request made the day before won't be ready.
