Good for anyone who wants sand, a long look at the water and a walk without the Ocean Drive noise. The trade-off: it's popular, and on a nice weekend you'll share it with a lot of people.

The early hours

Gates-style hours run 5 am to 10 pm, seven days a week, which makes this one of the easier places in South Beach to plan a sunrise around. Early morning is when it feels most like a neighborhood park: runners, dog walkers, people with coffee and nowhere to be. By midday the crowd shifts to beachgoers and visitors. If you want quiet, the first couple of hours after opening are your best shot. Same goes for weekdays over weekends.

Sand, grass and water

South Pointe sits at 1 Washington Ave, at the bottom edge of Miami Beach, so it works as both a park and a beach. You can spread a towel on the sand or stay on the grass if you'd rather skip the salt. The draw for most people is the open water view from the southern tip. It holds a 4.7 from about 6,800 Google reviews, which is a lot of people agreeing on one stretch of shoreline. It's a free, easy outing.

Closing time

The park shuts at 10 pm, so this isn't a late-night spot. Plan an evening stroll for golden hour and leave yourself time to wander back up Washington Avenue or toward Ocean Drive for dinner afterward. Late afternoon into evening is a nice window: the heat eases and the light over the water gets softer. Bring water and sunscreen during the day, since the sun at the tip doesn't let up much.
