Built for golfers and for groups in town for a wedding or conference. The trade-off is location: you're out in Doral, far from the beach, paying resort prices to stay mostly on property.

The Blue Monster and the other three

Four championship courses sit on this property, and the one golfers ask about by name is the Blue Monster. The resort has drawn players since it opened in the 1960s, when celebrities and the game's big names came through. There's also the Trump Golf Academy for instruction and player development, plus a clubhouse pro shop the resort calls one of the largest in the country. If you play, this is the reason to book. If you don't, the courses are mostly scenery from your villa-style room, and you're paying for lawns you won't walk.

Pool, spa and courts

The Royal Palm Pool has a 125-foot slide and 18 private cabanas, which makes it the part of the resort kids will remember. The spa is big at 48,000 square feet, and it offers a deep tissue massage with golf ball therapy aimed at players coming off a round. Tennis players get new Har-Tru courts, and there's a health club in the clubhouse. It's enough to fill a weekend without leaving, which helps, because the resort sits out west in Doral, a long way from the sand.

Where to eat on the grounds

BLT Prime is the steakhouse anchor, sharing the clubhouse with Champions Bar & Grill, the easier stop after a round. Palm Grill, The Living Room and a marketplace fill the gaps, and in-room dining covers nights you'd rather not move. The newest draw is Sushi by Bou, a chef-led omakase at a 20-seat counter, so plan ahead if that's the dinner you want. The resort also pushes a whiskey, bourbon and rare spirits selection. Prices aren't posted, so expect resort pricing and check before you sit down.
