Zoo Miami is a full day for kids from about 2 to 12 and well worth it with a stroller; the trade-off is the 30 to 40 minute drive south, very long walking distances and strong sun, so plan around the heat.

Why you go

Kids see elephants, giraffes, rhinos, tigers, gorillas and Florida wildlife in open habitats, plus the Amazon & Beyond rainforest section with splash features. The loop is long, so many families bring a stroller or wagon even for kids who usually walk. It rates 4.5 from 20,938 Google reviews. A full visit takes four to six hours, and few families see everything in one day.

When to go

Google lists it open every day from 10 am to 5 pm, and the zoo sells its last ticket at 4 pm. Be at the gate at 10 am, when animals are active and the paths are cooler. Winter months are the most comfortable; in summer take breaks in shaded and indoor spots. Weekends and school holidays draw big crowds. Summer storms are usually short, so wait them out under cover.

Know before you go

The zoo's FAQ lists admission at $30 for adults and $26 for ages 3 to 12, tax included, with kids 2 and under free. Parking is free. Outside food is not allowed, except baby food, food for kids 2 and under, and allergy food in a sandwich-size bag. Strollers rent by the hour. It is about 30 to 40 minutes south of downtown by car. Bring hats, sunscreen, refillable water and comfortable shoes.
