Cheap hotels in Miami Beach: where to look, and what the final bill adds
The cheapest beds in Miami Beach are hostel dorms. Here is where they are, the 14% room tax, resort fees and how to keep parking off the bill.
En corto
- Cheapest beds: Hostel dorms: Freehand Miami (6-bed rooms) and Viajero Miami (21 and over).
- Room tax: 14% in Miami Beach: 6% state, 1% county surtax, 7% local taxes.
- Resort fees: Must be inside the total price you see, under the FTC fee rule since May 2025.
- Parking: City garages top out at $20 a day; 42nd Street Garage is $1 an hour, $8 max.
- Busy dates: Art Basel December 4 to 6, 2026; Art Deco Weekend January 15 to 17, 2027.
A cheap Miami Beach stay is a hostel bed or a plain room away from Ocean Drive, booked on the total price after the 14% tax and any resort fee, with the car parked in a city garage instead of hotel valet.
The cheapest way to stay, by situation
| Solo traveler who wants company | A dorm bed. Freehand Miami at 2727 Indian Creek Drive has 6-bed shared rooms; Viajero Miami at 1120 Collins Avenue takes guests 21 and over only |
| Couple who wants a private room | Search the whole island, not only the Ocean Drive strip, and compare final totals with tax and resort fee included |
| Arriving by car | Pick a hotel near a city garage. The South Beach garages cap at $20 a day, the 42nd Street Garage at $8 |
| Staying three nights or more | Look for long-stay offers on hotel sites: Freehand lists 20% off three or more nights booked at least seven days ahead |
| Coming for Art Basel or Art Deco Weekend | Book as early as you can and compare the total, not the nightly rate; the whole island fills on those dates |
| Flying in without a car | Stay near a stop on the free trolley, which runs 8 am to 11 pm every day |
What gets added to the room rate
| Item | Amount | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Florida sales tax | 6% of the room rate | State of Florida, on any stay of six months or less |
| Miami-Dade surtax | 1% | County discretionary sales surtax |
| Local room taxes in Miami Beach | 7% | Includes the city's resort tax; the rest of Miami-Dade pays 6%, Surfside and Bal Harbour 4% |
| Total tax on a Miami Beach room | 14% | 6% plus 1% plus 7% |
| Resort or amenity fee | Set by each hotel | Must be included in the total price shown; taxes may be shown separately |
| Overnight parking | Up to $20 a day in a city garage | Hotel valet usually costs more; ask before you book |
The 7% local figure is from the state's rate chart revised in October 2026. The city's finance page lists a 4% resort tax on room rentals, which is part of that local share.

Hostels and shared rooms
Freehand Miami, at 2727 Indian Creek Drive in Mid-Beach, is a hotel with shared rooms, including a 6-bed room, as well as private rooms and suites. Its site puts it one block from the beach, about a five-minute walk, with a pool on an outdoor terrace and the Broken Shaker bar on a brick patio. There is no parking on site: Freehand points guests to a limited valet at the AC Hotel nearby for $55 plus tax a day, first come, first served. Dogs up to 75 pounds are allowed for $75 a stay.
The Freehand offers listed in October 2026 were 20% off stays of three or more nights booked at least seven days ahead, a fourth-night-free deal, and 25% off suites with the code SUITELIFE for stays booked and completed by December 30, 2026.
Viajero Miami is the South Beach option, at 1120 Collins Avenue in the former Stiles Hotel, in the Art Deco district. Viajero's own pages, as shown in search results in October 2026, describe dorms for 4, 6 or 8 people, private rooms with their own bathroom, pools and a bar, and a minimum age of 21. Its Miami booking page did not load for us, so check the current rate and rules on viajerohostels.com before you count on a bed.
Generator Miami, at 3120 Collins Avenue, was the other well-known hostel on the Beach. Its Miami pages returned errors when we checked in October 2026, so confirm it is taking bookings before you plan around it.
Where on the island the money goes further
The city prices parking by zone. On-street meters in South Beach cost $4 an hour from 9 am to 3 am, and the Entertainment District between Ocean Drive and Pennsylvania Avenue, 5th to 15th Street, charges $4 an hour around the clock. In East Middle Beach, 23rd to 44th Street between Collins Avenue and Indian Creek, meters are $3 an hour. In North Beach, above 63rd Street, they are $1 an hour from 8 am to 11 pm.
So if you are driving, a room in Mid-Beach or North Beach saves real money on parking even when the room rate is similar. The 42nd Street Garage at 400 West 42nd Street charges $1 an hour with an $8 maximum, against $20 a day at the 7th, 12th, 13th and 16th Street garages in South Beach.
Without a car, the free Miami Beach Trolley ties it together: four routes, including the South Beach Loop and the Collins Express, every 20 minutes or so on average, from 8 am to 11 pm.
Antes de ir
- Compare the total with fees. Since May 12, 2025, the FTC requires hotels and rental platforms to show the total price including mandatory fees such as a resort fee; taxes can still be shown separately before you pay.
- Add 14% for tax to any Miami Beach rate that is shown before taxes.
- Ask what parking costs before you book. If the hotel has no garage, the nearest city garage may be cheaper than its valet.
- City garages do not accept bills over $20, and fees include sales tax.
- Check direct-booking offers on the hotel's own site. The Colony Hotel on Ocean Drive, for example, says it matches valid third-party rates and gives late checkout to direct bookers when available.
- Ask whether a card deposit is held at check-in, and how much, before you book a hostel bed.
- Avoid the big weeks if the budget is tight: Art Basel Miami Beach runs December 4 to 6, 2026, and Art Deco Weekend January 15 to 17, 2027.
