Hora a hora
- At the gateGo up to the third level · Follow the rental car signs to the terminal's third level. Moving walkways there take you to the MIA Mover station, which sits between the Dolphin and Flamingo garages.
- The trainMIA Mover to the Rental Car Center · The MIA Mover is a 1.25-mile elevated train that links the terminal with the Rental Car Center and the Miami Intermodal Center, where the Metrorail station is.
- ArrivalFind your counter · The Rental Car Center is a four-level building at 3900 NW 25th St. The center is open 24 hours, but MIA warns that some companies close between 11 pm and 5 am, so a midnight landing needs a check with your company first.
- Off-airport bookingCall for the pickup · Companies that are not in the building collect passengers on request right outside the Rental Car Center lobby. Ride the MIA Mover anyway, then call from the lobby.
- Before you driveSettle the toll question · Ask at the counter how the company bills tolls and what its daily fee is, or register your own SunPass with the rental plate. Do it before the exit gate, not on the expressway.
- Return dayBack to NW 25th Street · Every route ends on Le Jeune Road (SR 953) and then NW 25th Street. Follow the overhead signs to the Rental Car Center and leave time for the train back to the terminal.

MIA's rental page carries an 'Updated Dec. 2022' stamp, and its FAQ still describes the building as home to 16 companies. Treat the list as the airport's current published one and confirm your booking with the company itself.

Booked an off-airport company?
MIA lists a second group of companies that are not inside the Rental Car Center, among them Americars, Easirent, Miami Rent A Car, Green Motion, Fox Rent A Car, NU Car Rentals, U-Save and Dash Rent A Car. They pick passengers up outside the Rental Car Center lobby when you ask, so the first step is the same: take the MIA Mover, then phone the number on your booking.
These deals can be cheaper on the booking screen, but the pickup adds a wait at both ends of the trip. If you are on a tight return flight, the companies inside the building save you that second wait.
Tolls: decide before you leave the garage
Florida's Turnpike says Toll-By-Plate, the mail-in bill for drivers without a transponder, is not available for customers in rental cars, because the invoice goes to the registered owner, which is the rental company. So you have two choices.
The first is the rental company's own toll program. Most companies let you include tolls in the rental agreement, each with its own fees, and the terms are in your contract. The second is your own SunPass portable transponder: add the rental car's plate to your SunPass account with the start and end dates of the rental, on SunPass.com or by phone, and remove the transponder when you return the car.
If your transponder is missing or does not work, tolls are not posted to your account and the rental company may charge you under its own program. Read the toll section of the contract at the counter; it is usually the fee people notice weeks later.
The surcharge on every Florida rental
State law adds a surcharge of $2 per day, or any part of a day, to car rentals in Florida. It applies only to the first 30 days of a rental and is itself subject to sales tax. It appears on your bill as a separate line, so it is not a hidden fee from the company.
Other charges, such as airport concession fees, insurance and fuel options, depend on the company and the booking. Compare the total with taxes on the final screen, not the daily rate.
