Miami in September: peak hurricane season, the second-wettest month, and who should still go
September holds the statistical peak of hurricane season and about 10 inches of rain. Here is who should skip it, who can make it work, and how to book.
En corto
- Hurricanes: The season peaks on September 10, per the National Hurricane Center.
- Rain: About 10.2 inches, second only to June at the airport.
- Daytime: Average highs ease from 90°F on September 1 to 88°F by the 30th.
- Night: Lows of 76 to 77°F all month.
- Book it like this: Refundable rate, flexible flights, a hotel outside the surge zone if you can.
September is the riskiest month to plan a fixed-date Miami trip because it holds the peak of hurricane season; if your dates can move or your booking is refundable, it is still hot, green and workable, but a wedding or once-a-year trip is better placed from mid-November.

What peak season means in practice
The National Hurricane Center puts the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season on September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. That describes the whole Atlantic basin, not a forecast for Miami. The point is that the odds are at their highest, so your booking should be able to absorb a change.
The National Weather Service calls late August through mid-October the most variable part of the wet season, because tropical waves, storms and early fall fronts all play a part. A tropical storm that never becomes a hurricane can still bring days of rain and street flooding.
If a storm does threaten, Miami-Dade County orders evacuations by storm surge zone, based on the storm's track and expected surge rather than its category. Look up your hotel's zone on the county's Know Your Zone map before you arrive, and sign up for Miami-Dade Alerts. Miami Beach also sends emergency and major traffic alerts: text MBAlert to 888777.
