Abuela's Tacos
A late-night Mexican spot on Collins Ave in South Beach, with birria, blue-corn carnitas, molcajetes and weekend breakfast.
Revisado octubre de 2026
Good for a casual, filling taco dinner or a late bite in South Beach that won't wreck the budget. The menu is wide and crowd-pleasing rather than deep, so order the specialties, not the burger.
The tacos to order
Birria tacos with consommé for dipping and Yucatan-style carnitas, slow-roasted in banana leaves and served on blue corn tortillas with chicharrón, read as the most particular plates on a long menu. Every taco order comes with white rice and beans, so it's a meal, not a snack. Al pastor gets grilled pineapple, the fish tacos are tempura-fried, and there's an Angus ribeye version if you want to splurge. For the table, the molcajete is a lava rock bowl of steak, chicken, shrimp and chorizo in red or green sauce. A seafood version swaps in octopus, scallops, mussels and clams.
Eggs before the beach
Friday through Sunday the doors open at 9 am, and there's a breakfast menu to match: huevos rancheros with guajillo sauce and chorizo, huevos divorciados with red and green salsa, a chorizo breakfast burrito, and steak and eggs with a 10 oz skirt. Most plates come with potatoes and melted cheese, which tells you the portion philosophy. Drinks run from cortadito and fresh juices to Bloody Marys, mimosas and a Cubanito. Monday to Thursday it doesn't open until noon, so weekday mornings are out. Kids get chicken fingers or quesadillas with fries, and there's a short veggie section.
After midnight on Collins
It stays open until 11:45 pm most nights and 12:45 am on Friday and Saturday, which is late for a sit-down place in this part of South Beach. That makes it a solid fallback when dinner plans fall through or the night out needs tacos at the end. It's at 820 Collins Ave, two blocks back from Ocean Drive, and a 4.9 from about 9,200 Google reviews is unusually high for this stretch. Prices sit at $$. The menu is broad rather than regional: fajitas, burritos, a guacamole burger and a Caesar salad share space with the birria.
