Art Deco Welcome Center
The Miami Design Preservation League's Ocean Drive base, with a small Deco museum, a gift shop and the daily walking tour.

For first-timers who want South Beach's buildings explained, not just photographed. The two-hour tour is the best way in, but at $50 per adult it's a real spend for a walk.
The walking tour
The daily Art Deco Walking Tour runs about two hours and covers roughly 1.5 miles of the Miami Beach Architectural Historic District. Groups top out at 20 people, and everyone gets a headset, so you can hear the guide over Ocean Drive. The route covers three styles: Art Deco's curves and pastels, Mediterranean Revival's arched loggias and terracotta roofs, and Miami Modern's jet-age lines. The part worth paying for is that the tour goes inside, into hotel lobbies, restaurants and commercial buildings you'd otherwise only see from the sidewalk. No architecture background needed. Good shoes are.
What it costs
Adults pay $50, seniors 65 and up pay $40, teens 13 to 17 pay $35, and kids 12 and under go free. That makes it an easier family outing than most of Ocean Drive, at least with little ones. Members of the Miami Design Preservation League, the nonprofit that runs the place, take the walking tour free, which pays off if you live here and host visitors often. Prefer your own pace? There's an app-based audio tour in four languages. Groups can book a private tour starting at $400, and there's also Mizner's Dream, a historical cruise on Biscayne Bay. Tour proceeds fund the league's preservation work.
Inside the center
The building at 1001 Ocean Drive is a welcome center, small museum and gift shop in one, open 9 am to 5 pm every day. The museum walks through Miami Beach's architectural history, and the shop leans on vintage pieces, collectibles, books, jewelry, local art, prints and beach memorabilia. Staff get credit from visitors for telling them where to go next and whether public transit will get them there. It holds a 4.6 from about 4,700 Google reviews. Even without a tour, it's a sensible first stop before you wander the district on your own.
