Best for a brunch that drifts into drinks, or a late dinner when most of Brickell's kitchens have closed. The trade-off: the 20% service charge is already on the bill, and Thursday through Saturday gets loud.

The brunch menu

The weekend brunch menu starts small: a toast basket with local bread, butter and jam for $7.95, the day's pastries and croissants for $6.95, and a homemade bagel with cream cheese for $6.95. The bagel with smoked salmon, capers and red onion runs $21.95, and an açai bowl is $15.95. One of the reviews the restaurant highlights singles out the vegan pancakes. The cooking leans modern European. The space was fully renovated in 2018 by the second generation of the family that opened the first Balans in London in 1987. It holds 4.7 from about 4,000 Google reviews, which is a lot of happy breakfasts.

Garden, terrace or dining room

There are three places to sit, and the one you pick changes the meal. The outdoor garden and terrace work for a long brunch, as long as the weather cooperates. The indoor dining room is styled as London meets Miami, and it's the better choice in August or when it's raining. The restaurant recommends booking ahead and takes reservations online, so reserve if you care where you end up. This is the Brickell branch. The other Miami location is on Lincoln Road and closes at 11 pm. If you want a late table, this is the one.

Thursday to Saturday nights

From Thursday through Saturday there's a DJ, live music and other entertainment, and the room turns from brasserie into bar. It's open until 2 am Thursday through Sunday and until 1 am Monday through Wednesday, which makes it a real option for a late martini. There's also a happy hour menu, plus a Miami Spice menu during the season. Come on a weeknight if you want dinner and a conversation. Come on a weekend night if the music is the point.
