Mandolin is the long lunch of the Design District: Aegean plates served in the patio of a 1930s house, white and blue and shaded, the kind of place you leave two hours later than planned.
Why you go
Because the setting does half the work. A small house from the 1930s with a garden patio, tables under trees, and a menu of Greek and Turkish dishes made the careful way: grilled fish, meze, salads, bread. It has been the neighborhood's calm table for years and the regulars keep it that way.
When to go
Lunch on a weekday, when the garden is cool and half empty. Open noon to 11 pm every day. Weekend brunch and dinner fill up; book for either. In summer, the patio is better after 7 pm.
Know before you go
$$$ and worth booking. The address is 4312 NE 2nd Avenue, at the north edge of the Design District, a ten-minute walk from the main shopping blocks. Street parking on the side streets is usually possible.
