North Beach Oceanside Park is the low-key family pick on Miami Beach, with shade, a playground and a beach for dogs; the trade-off is that it is far from the food and nightlife of South Beach.

Why you go

You come for an easy, local beach day. The park sits between Collins Avenue and the ocean in North Beach, with shaded paths through sea grape and palms, picnic pavilions, a playground for ages 5 to 12, outdoor fitness stations and a beach walk. It also has Bark Beach, one of the few places on Miami Beach where dogs can go on the sand. It rates 4.7 from more than 4,800 Google reviews.

When to go

Google lists 7:30 am to 8:30 pm daily, while the city lists sunrise to sunset, so plan for daylight. Mornings are quiet, with runners and dog walkers. Weekend afternoons bring families to the pavilions, which can be booked for parties. Midday on the sand is hot, so use the shaded paths behind the dunes in the middle of the day.

Know before you go

Parking is around the edge of the park, and it is easier here than in South Beach. Restrooms are at the pavilions. Dogs have their own Bark Beach area; check the city's Bark Beach rules before you bring one. Pavilion rentals for a party run 9 am to 5 pm and must be booked through the city. Compared with Mid Beach, this is quieter and more local.
