Shepherd Artisan Coffee

A South Beach cafe on Collins Avenue serving espresso, pastries and an all-day Mediterranean-leaning breakfast menu.

Good for an early coffee and a real breakfast a block from the beach. The coffee is fairly priced, but plates near $20 and $2 milk swaps add up quickly.

The breakfast plates

Breakfast runs all day, and the menu leans Mediterranean. The Shepherd Breakfast ($19.99) brings two eggs, Mediterranean salad, feta, tuna salad and black olives with a bagel or multigrain bread, plus orange juice, lemonade or brewed coffee. The Green Breakfast ($16.99) swaps in avocado and cream cheese with 9-grain toast. Shakshuka with jalapeños and feta is $18.99. If you'd rather eat on the way to the sand, the bacon, egg and cheese bagel is $11.99. Gluten-free bread costs $2.99 extra.

Coffee and the pastry case

The coffee prices are reasonable for Collins Avenue: a single espresso is $3.20, a cortadito $3.70 and a small latte $4.50. Alternative milks, including oat and macadamia, add $2, and flavors add $1.50, so a dressed-up iced drink climbs fast. On the bakery side, croissants run from $4.50 plain to $5.00 almond, and there are big cookies, muffins and cinnamon rolls. Some cakes are vegan, gluten-free or sugar-free at $9.90. Cannoli are two for $4.99.

Early hours on Collins

Google lists it open 6:30 am to 9 pm every day. That makes it an easy stop when your hotel breakfast hasn't started yet or you want a coffee after dinner. The cafe's own site says 7 am to 8 pm, though, so don't count on the first or last hour. It's on the 900 block of Collins, a block from Ocean Drive. It holds a 4.7 from about 4,350 Google reviews, which is a lot of traffic for a coffee shop.
