Deering Estate

16701 SW 72nd Ave, Palmetto Bay · Midtown

A county-run historic estate on Biscayne Bay, south of Coral Gables. Charles Deering, the industrialist, bought the land and renovated the old Richmond Inn between 1913 and 1918, then built the Stone House in 1922 to hold his art collection. He used the estate as a winter home until his death in 1927. The Richmond Cottage is older: Samuel H. Richmond built it in 1896 and opened it as a hotel after an addition in 1900.

The grounds are the reason to come today. The Main Grounds, the Mangrove Boardwalk and the Garden Brook Trail are open for self-guided walks during opening hours, and picnics are allowed outdoors, with first-come tables in the Palm Grove.

The historic houses can close without notice during special events.

What is closed, and what you still get

The Stone House, the big house most photos show, has been closed to the public since April 28, 2025 for a full restoration: re-roofing, repairs to doors, windows and shutters, new air conditioning on the third floor and electrical work. Its historic Cuban clay roof tiles are being removed and kept for future display. The estate has not posted a reopening date.

While it is closed, the daily guided museum tour at 11:30 am, included with admission, covers the Stone House from the outside and the interior of the Richmond Cottage. The cottage also hosts a series of exhibitions called Stone House Next Door.

The nature side is untouched. From October 1, 2026 to May 31, 2027, a naturalist leads a free hike through the protected natural areas at 12:30 pm daily, covering native plants, wildlife and the Cutler Burial Mound. Sign up at the Main Gate before it starts; places are first come, first served. The estate warns that mosquitoes are common, so wear long sleeves and long pants.

People lived here long before Deering. The estate's history page dates the Tequesta, the Biscayne Bay people, from about the 3rd century BCE to the mid-18th century.

The two water trips worth planning around

The historic kayak adventure leaves the estate's boat basin with a naturalist and paddles out across Biscayne Bay for three hours. At $50 it includes general admission for the rest of the day. After October 31 and December 5, the next dates are January 2, February 6, March 6, April 3 and May 1, 2027. Arrive at the Visitor Center 15 minutes early; late arrivals count as no-shows with no refund.

The lighthouse cruise on November 14, 2026 is a four-hour catamaran trip with a park ranger past the Cape Florida, Fowey Rocks and Boca Chita lighthouses and the Stiltsville houses. You may get to climb the Boca Chita lighthouse, but it is not guaranteed. Weather can cancel or reschedule either trip.
