For anyone who wants real sand and clear water out of a Miami day trip, and doesn't mind the drive. The trade-off is distance: it's a long way for one day, so commit to staying a while.

Three beaches, one park

Most state parks give you one stretch of sand. Bahia Honda gives you three, which means you can pick your spot instead of settling for whatever's left. It holds 4.6 from about 13,400 Google reviews, a lot of people agreeing on one place at the far end of a long drive. Treat it as a full beach day rather than a stop on the way somewhere else. Pack sunscreen, water and a towel, then plan on moving between beaches if the first one doesn't suit you.

Getting on the water

Swimming is only part of it. The park rents kayaks, so you can paddle out along the shoreline instead of watching from a towel. It also runs snorkeling tours out to a marine sanctuary, which is the reason a lot of people make the trip at all. If you've only snorkeled off a crowded city beach, this is a different level of reef. Book the tour early in your day so you aren't rushing back to the car later, and bring your own mask if you'd rather not share.

Planning the day

A snack bar covers the basics, but don't expect a full restaurant. Bring a cooler if you want a real lunch, or plan to eat on the drive back.
