The Dante Fascell Visitor Center suits kids from about 4 to 12 who like animals and boats, and entry is free; the trade-off is the long drive to Homestead and that most of the park itself is underwater and needs a boat.

Why you go

This is the land base of a park that is mostly water. Inside, kids handle corals, sponges and bones at a touch table, look at a wall of fish species and see artifacts from an 18th century British shipwreck. Outside, the Convoy Point jetty boardwalk is an easy walk of under a mile with bay views, fine for strollers. It rates 4.7 from 1,650 Google reviews. Allow one to two hours, longer if kids work through the Junior Ranger booklet for a badge.

When to go

Google and the park service list the visitor center open every day from 9 am to 5 pm. Mornings are best for the jetty walk, since there is little shade on the boardwalk and it gets hot fast from May to October. Weekends bring picnicking families to the grounds but rarely crowd the exhibits. On a rainy day the indoor exhibits cover about an hour, so pair it with something else in Homestead.

Know before you go

The park service says there is no entrance fee for the park or the visitor center. Parking is on site. Boat trips to the islands and reefs are run separately and cost extra, so check current prices on the park's site before promising one to the kids. It is in Homestead, roughly an hour south of downtown Miami. Bring sunscreen, hats, bug spray in summer and your own water, and ask at the desk for the Junior Ranger booklet.
