North Beach and Mid-Beach Miami: the quieter half of Miami Beach, street by street
Where Mid-Beach and North Beach start and end, which beach parks to use, what parking costs and when the dog beach and Bandshell are open.
The short version
- Mid-Beach: Roughly 23rd to 63rd Street, the hotel strip along Collins Ave.
- North Beach: Everything north of 63rd Street, up to 87th Street.
- Cheapest parking: $1 an hour in North Beach and West Mid-Beach; 42nd Street Garage caps at $8.
- Beach path: The Beachwalk runs 9 miles from South Pointe to 87th Street, open 24 hours.
- Dogs: The city's only dog beach: 80th to 81st Street, Fridays to Sundays.
If South Beach feels like too much, base your beach days in Mid-Beach or North Beach: the same ocean, the same Beachwalk, parking at a fraction of the price and parks with shade and playgrounds.
Editor's note
If you only know South Beach, the city looks different north of 23rd Street. Mid-Beach and North Beach have the same sand and lifeguards as South Beach, cheaper parking and far fewer crowds. The trade-off is fewer bars and restaurants within a short walk of the beach, so this half of Miami Beach suits families, runners and anyone who comes for the water.
Where Mid-Beach and North Beach are
The city's own parking zones are the clearest map. East Middle Beach runs from 23rd to 44th Street between Collins Avenue and Indian Creek, the stretch of big oceanfront hotels. West Middle Beach covers the rest of the area north of 23rd and south of 63rd Street. North Beach is everything north of 63rd Street, up to the border with Surfside.
Tying it together is the Beachwalk, a nine-mile oceanfront promenade from South Pointe Park to 87th Street that continues toward Surfside and Bal Harbour. The city says it is open 24 hours a day. In Mid-Beach it replaced the old wooden boardwalk between 23rd and 45th Street with a wider, accessible paver path, finished in June 2022.

It is the easiest way to move between beach parks without the car, and the city keeps it open 24 hours.
North Beach Oceanside Park
An enclosed oceanfront park with shade, restrooms at the pavilions, a playground with shaded climbing structures for ages 5 to 12 and eleven fitness stations along the path between 82nd and 85th Street.

Where they are
The dog beach, the Bandshell and the lifeguards
Dogs are banned from Miami Beach's beaches except at North Beach Bark Beach, between 80th and 81st Street. It opens Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only: 1:30 pm to 5:30 pm from November to February and 3 pm to 7 pm from March to October. There is a metered lot across the street; check the city's rules page for registration before you bring a dog.
A few blocks south, the Miami Beach Bandshell at 7275 Collins Avenue holds concerts and community events. Its calendar lists shows on most weekends in November, including Hot Mulligan on November 13 and the Buena Vista Orchestra on November 21. Check each event's page for tickets.
Miami Beach Ocean Rescue covers this half of the city too. Its conditions page lists lifeguard duty hours of 9 am to 7 pm, with towers opening at 9:30 am and closing at 6:30 pm. The Florida Department of Health samples the water weekly at 79th, 73rd and 53rd Street among other spots, and the results are on the same page.
