Virginia Key Beach: the historic park on the causeway, what it costs and why you wade instead of swim
Historic Virginia Key Beach Park: the $5 to $12 car fee, seasonal hours, the no-swimming rule, the carousel, and what else is on the island.
The short version
- What it is: Historic Virginia Key Beach Park, 4020 Virginia Beach Dr, a City of Miami park.
- Entry: $5 per car Mon to Thu, $10 Fri to Sun, $12 on holidays (park site, Oct 2026).
- Hours: 7 am to 6 pm April to October, 7 am to 5 pm November to March.
- The catch: Swimming is not allowed; no pets, no alcohol, no fishing.
- Getting there: Rickenbacker Causeway from Brickell; the causeway has a toll.
Virginia Key Beach is a picnic-and-history park more than a swimming beach: pay $5 to $12 per car, bring a grill plan and a book, and save the swim for Crandon or Bill Baggs down the road.
Historic Virginia Key Beach Park
Established in 1945 as a beach for African Americans during segregation, when Miami's other beaches were closed to them. Miami-Dade County transferred the former "colored-only" park to the City of Miami in 1982, and a city trust runs it today.
What you get now is a long waterfront park with pavilions, picnic tables, park-provided charcoal grills, restrooms and a historic carousel. On weekends and holidays the carousel gives free rides from noon to 5 pm.
Entry is per vehicle: $5 Monday to Thursday, $10 Friday to Sunday and $12 on holidays. The park's rules say everyone entering pays the standard entry fee; the page does not list a separate walk-in or bike price, so ask at the gate.

Why you wade here instead of swimming
The park's own rules list swimming among the prohibited activities. The reason is the water itself: WLRN reported that a NOAA study found strong, swift currents and a drop-off of more than six feet about 50 to 100 yards from shore, and that this is why the City of Miami banned swimming. That report is from 2012, and the current rules page still lists the ban.
So treat it as a beach for wading, sunbathing and picnics. If the swim matters, Crandon Park and Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park are further along the same road on Key Biscayne; see our Crandon guide for parking, fees and swimming there.
Water-quality advisories also come and go on Virginia Key after sewage overflows. In November 2022, for example, the county lifted one for Virginia Key Beach while keeping it for nearby Shrimper's Lagoon. Check the Florida Department of Health beach sampling results if you plan to wade with children.
Renting a pavilion or the carousel
The trust rents most of the park. The Main, Dance, Green and Orange pavilions are $250 each, with electricity, two grills and room for up to 150 people. The Island Pavilion and the Carousel Tent are $150, with no electricity and one grill. Six day-use cabins with grills in the Beach Front Village start at $80.
The historic carousel can be booked privately for $75 an hour with a two-hour minimum. On weekends and holidays the private slots are 8 am to noon and 5 pm to sunset, because noon to 5 pm is free public riding.
Nothing is held until the trust approves the application and receives payment, and fees are due five business days before the event. Call (305) 960-4600 to check a date first.

Hobie Island Beach Park
The strip of sand along the causeway between the toll plaza and Virginia Key. A Village of Key Biscayne parks guide calls it one of Miami's most popular dog-friendly beaches and a favorite for windsurfing, kayaking and paddleboarding.
It is a Miami-Dade County site. The north side reopened in December 2024 after being closed since Hurricane Irma in 2017, with a new shoreline and a bike and walking path under the William Powell Bridge.
Where they are
Before you drive over
- The Rickenbacker Causeway has a toll at its west end near Brickell Avenue. Miami-Dade's 2025 bond report lists $2.25 with SunPass and $3.00 by plate for a two-axle car; check the county's current rate
- Bring cash or a card for the per-car entry; the fee is per vehicle, not per person
- Pack charcoal food only: personal propane tanks and generators are banned
- Leave the dog, the cooler of beer and the fishing rod at home; all three break the park rules
- From November 1 the park closes at 5 pm, and the gate shuts 30 minutes before that
- On Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day the park is closed
