How to plan a Miami date that works
Plan around sunset. Most of the best dates here are built on the hour when the bay turns orange: the boats leave Bayside around then, South Pointe Park closes at sunset, and the rooftops fill up right after. Check the sunset time for your date and book backward from it.
Then check the day. Miami venues close on odd days: PAMM on Tuesday and Wednesday, Vizcaya on Tuesday, Puttery on Monday. Rosa Sky does not list Monday hours at all. Thursday is the strongest night of the week for a cheap date, because PAMM is free after 5 pm and Ball & Chain runs its free salsa class.
Getting around: a rideshare is simplest at night. Downtown and Brickell also have the free Metromover, which runs 5:30 am to 10 pm. Miami-Dade County says the Financial District station is closed for five weeks from October 24, and Brickell Loop trips start and end at Brickell station meanwhile.
Miami Skyline Cruises
Every cruise lasts 90 minutes. The sunset cruise is $28.99 for adults and $22.99 for children 4 to 12; the night skyline cruise is $29.99 and $23.99; daytime cruises start at $26.99. Children 3 and under ride free.
Times move with the season. The winter schedule lists a 6 pm sunset cruise, a 7 pm early evening cruise and a 7:30 pm night cruise; in summer the sunset tours leave at 6:30 and 7 pm, and the 8 pm night tour runs on weekends only. Check in behind Victoria's Secret on the waterside at least 30 minutes early. The Mojito Bar on board is run by a third party; drinks are extra, and outside alcohol is not allowed.
BALL & CHAIN
A Calle Ocho bar established in 1935 with a stage shaped like a pineapple. Its Thursday night, Little Havana Under the Stars, runs 9 pm to midnight with a free salsa class at 9 pm. There is no cover, and the only rule is 21 and over with ID.
It is open daily from 11 am, until 3 am on Friday and Saturday, so the class can turn into a long night. Other nights have their own themes and bands on its events calendar.
Pérez Art Museum Miami
Adults normally pay $18, but Thursdays after 5 pm are free and the museum stays open until 9 pm. It is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, and ticket sales stop 30 minutes before closing.
The building sits on the bay between the Arsht Center and the Kaseya Center, so a Thursday evening here leads straight into dinner downtown.
Puttery
Unlimited play is $25 for adults; one 18-hole round is $21. The Putt & Plate combo, $29.99, adds an entrée under $25. Hours are Tuesday to Thursday 3 to 10 pm, Friday 3 pm to 1 am, Saturday noon to 1 am and Sunday noon to 10 pm. It is closed on Monday.
After 5 pm on Friday and Saturday it is 18 and over, and you may be asked for photo ID. Walk-ins are welcome, but you can book up to 21 days ahead on Tock.
Twenty-two floors above Brickell, with the skyline and the bay around you. Its site lists Tuesday to Saturday from 4:30 pm to 2 am and Sunday from 2 pm to 1 am. Monday is not listed, so do not plan on it.
Tables are booked on Tock. Without a booking, go early in the evening rather than late on a Saturday.

Red Phone Booth: how the hidden bar works
Red Phone Booth is a speakeasy at 1010 Brickell Avenue that you enter by dialing a secret code inside a red phone booth. There is no fixed password: its site says the code comes from a member, a hotel concierge or a partner, or through the Gain Access button on its website, and entry is not guaranteed without membership.
The dress code is upscale. Its own dress code page rules out athletic wear, sneakers, ball caps, flip-flops and ripped clothing; dark tailored jeans are fine with dress shoes. Everyone must be 21 or over.
