Taxi or Uber from MIA
Forget the flat taxi fare to Miami Beach that older guides mention. Miami-Dade County eliminated taxi flat fares from MIA and PortMiami in 2022 (Resolution R-700-22). Every taxi now runs the meter: $2.95 for the first sixth of a mile, 85 cents for each further sixth up to one mile, then 55 cents per sixth of a mile, plus $24 an hour of waiting time.
On top of the meter come a $2 charge for every trip that starts at the airport and the tolls on the way. Trips from MIA have a $15 minimum. There is no charge for extra passengers or luggage, which is where a taxi beats a ride app for a family with suitcases. SUVs and vans can add a 30% large vehicle surcharge, shown on a decal inside the cab.
Uber and Lyft pick up on the arrivals level (level 1) and the departures level (level 2); the app tells you the exact spot. Their price changes with demand, so at a busy hour open both apps and look at the taxi line before deciding. We do not quote an average fare to South Beach, because none of the official sources publishes one.
