In breve

  • Cheapest racks: Goodwill, with big stores in Allapattah, Little Havana and on Calle Ocho.
  • Best charity boutique: Dragonfly Thrift in South Miami, 20% off on Fridays.
  • Thrift strip: Flamingo Plaza in Hialeah, home of Red, White & Blue.
  • Curated vintage: Fly Boutique in the MiMo District on Biscayne Blvd.
  • Sale day to know: Dragonfly drops new designer and vintage pieces Tuesdays at 11 am.

Start at a big Goodwill for volume, go to Dragonfly or Lotus House for better pieces that fund a cause, and save Fly Boutique for when you want vintage someone has already picked through for you.

The short answer

Miami thrifting splits three ways. Goodwill runs the big, cheap, everyday stores. Charity boutiques such as Dragonfly and Lotus House price a little higher but pick better stock and send the money to a cause. Vintage shops in the MiMo District and Little River sell curated clothes at boutique prices.

Tourists on Miami Beach have the least choice close by: Goodwill's only Miami Beach listing, on 71st Street in Normandy Isle, is a donation point, not a store. Plan on driving or taking a rideshare to the mainland.

Charity boutiques worth the trip

Dragonfly Thrift Boutique is run by the Ladies Empowerment & Action Program (LEAP), and all proceeds go to helping women who have left prison. Its own site lists the boutique at 5815 SW 68th St in South Miami, open Monday to Friday 11 am to 7 pm, Saturday 11 am to 6 pm and Sunday 11 am to 5 pm. Fridays bring 20% off in store and online, and new luxury designer and vintage collections go out on Tuesdays at 11 am. Some older listings still give a Calle Ocho address; the store's own site is the one to trust.

Lotus House Thrift Chic Boutique, at 2040 NW 7th Ave, sells low-cost clothing and household goods, with proceeds going to the Lotus House women's shelter nearby. Its website was not reachable when we checked, and only third-party listings give hours, so call ahead before you go.

Hialeah's thrift strip and the vintage shops

Flamingo Plaza in Hialeah is the closest thing Miami has to a thrift district, a strip mall of secondhand shops. Its anchor, Red, White & Blue, is described by Time Out as cash-only, with an ATM inside and weekly 50% off specials. We could not find an official site with its hours or which day is half-price, so check by phone or on its social pages. The Goodwill at Flamingo Park Plaza, 4410 W 16th Ave, is a few minutes away.

For vintage someone has already curated, Fly Boutique at 7235 Biscayne Blvd in the MiMo District sells vintage clothing, designer pieces and collectibles. Its own site refused our connection, so check its hours there or on its social pages before you go. Up the road in Little River, Mids Market is known for a rework station where you can alter what you buy; Time Out and Miami New Times give different street addresses, so confirm the location first.

  • Carry some cash: at least one Hialeah favorite is cash-only
  • Go on a weekday morning if you want the racks before the crowds
  • Check the store's own page the same day, since thrift hours change
  • Ask about returns before you pay, and try things on
  • Pair Little River and the MiMo District in one afternoon; they are neighbors in northeast Miami
