For the curious, the sober-curious and anyone who wants a calm hangout with cheap drinks and a deck of cards. The trade-off: it closes at 9 pm daily, and event nights aren't posted clearly, so check first.

What to order

Traditional kava, served fresh, is the point. It's the Pacific Island root drink that's been shared in ceremonies for centuries, and this place bills itself as the City of Miami's first kava bar, open since 2015. If you're not ready for kava, the menu also covers teas, yerba mate and specialty coffee. The house brand, House of Roots, makes 16-ounce Icey Tea cans in three versions: Cheech tastes like lemonade, Mr. T is the extra-strength one, and the plain Icey Tea is pitched as grit-free. Prices sit at the single-dollar-sign level, so trying a couple won't sting.

The room

Board games, cards, books and video games are part of the pitch, plus whatever happens to be on the TV. The owners sell it as a quiet space for slowing down, and the hours back that up: 10 am to 9 pm every day of the week. That makes it a midmorning coffee stop, an afternoon break or an early evening wind-down, not a late-night bar. It's an easy place to meet a friend who doesn't drink. You'll find it on NE 59th Street at the edge of Little River, in what the owners call the Magic City District.

Open mics and the Wynwood years

Before landing on 59th Street, this was Roots Miami Kava in Wynwood, where it hosted weekly open mics and, in 2019, a comedy play every Tuesday at 8 pm. That creative streak is still part of the identity: the owners say they back live music, open mics and local art showcases. There's no current event calendar on their site, though, so text or call before planning a night around a performance. Private events go through a booking form or the office line. A 4.7 from about 430 Google reviews is a solid sign the regulars like what they get.

Da sapere

Google lists the address as 393 NE 59th St and the bar's own site says 395, so look for either number on the block.
