For anyone who wants a coffee stop with something to look at, or a living gift that isn't grocery-store flowers. Pieces are mostly art-gallery priced, and the plants don't travel well.

A gas station full of moss

Plant the Future works out of a converted 1960s gas station on the banks of the Little River, right on NE 2nd Ave. It's a cafe and gallery in one, run by the biophilic design studio that Paloma Teppa and Yair Marcoschamer started in 2008. Biophilic is their word for art built around the urge to be near living things, and the room takes it literally: moss on the walls, cacti in bowls, terrariums on most surfaces. Google files it as both a garden center and a coffee shop, which is about right. It holds 4.6 from about 180 Google reviews and is open 9 am to 6 pm Monday through Saturday.

What's on the walls

The wall art is preserved moss, sorted into series with names like Abstract, Coral, Botanics, Mosscape and a Matisse Inspired set. This is the same studio behind installations at 1 Hotel Miami Beach and American Dream in New Jersey, so the gallery doubles as a showroom for commission work: moss murals, ceilings and full walls. Since the moss is preserved, nobody has to water any of it, which is the whole pitch for a living room or office. The studio also runs Gallery Nights, but no dates were posted in what we checked, so look at their social accounts before planning an evening around one.

Taking something home

Prices on the site start reasonable and climb fast. A ceramic cup or a Forest Bath home fragrance runs from $30, a Magic Box is $50 to $60, and a rose quartz crystal garden is $98. Cactus and succulent gardens in the Tokyo bowls start around $155 to $160, and the white fishbowl terrarium starts at $230. The tabletop range also pulls in Jonathan Adler, Lladró and vintage pieces. Living arrangements are pickup or South Florida delivery only, so if you're flying home, stick to the moss decor, which ships anywhere in the US. It's a better gift stop than a browse-and-leave stop, unless the coffee is the point.

Da sapere
