For plant people, history buffs and anyone who wants a quiet morning in the Grove. The trade-off: it's open only Tuesday to Saturday, last entry is 3 pm, and you'll want to book ahead to be sure of parking.

Fairchild's old place

David Fairchild, the plant explorer who brought a lot of the tropics home with him, used to live here, and he named the garden after villages he saw in Malaysia. That history is the point. The grounds hold flowering trees and tropical fruit, including more than 50 types of mango, plus historical landmarks along the trails. It's a smaller, more personal stop than the big Miami gardens, and it rates 4.6 from about 570 Google reviews. Pick the self-guided route and wander, or book a guided tour for the plants and the backstory, then keep exploring on your own.

Booking and getting in

Reservations aren't required, but the garden encourages them so you're guaranteed a parking spot, and on a residential stretch of Douglas Road that matters. It's closed Sunday and Monday. Tuesday through Saturday the doors open at 9 am and last entry is 3 pm; the garden's site says the grounds stay open until 4:30. Admission prices aren't listed in what we checked, so confirm when you book. Show up on foot, by bike or by rideshare and you get $2 off, which is a nice nudge to skip the car entirely.

Art among the trees

The Kampong runs art shows that use the garden as the gallery. Out of Darkness: The Ecology of Care, inspired by South Florida's mangroves, runs from September 2026 to September 2027. Paloma Teppa's EDEN, which reimagines Fairchild's home in the present, runs October 2026 through January 2027. Priscilla Aleman's The Smell of Banana Flowers, on Afro-Caribbean mythology and plant knowledge, opens in November 2026. There's also Junior Yoga for kids 5 to 10 with an adult, and a relaxed embroidery workshop inspired by the garden. Check dates before you go.
