Great for families and a rainy day downtown, with enough to fill half a day. Tickets and the garage add up for a family of four, so book ahead online.

Under the Gulf Stream tank

The aquarium runs down three levels around a 500,000-gallon Gulf Stream tank. On the open-air top level you look across the water at hammerhead sharks and devil rays, with a stingray touch tank and an aviary nearby. The middle level holds nearly 30 smaller tanks and mangrove roots. At the bottom, a round oculus window of about 31 feet lets you look straight up at fish passing overhead, the shot everyone photographs.

Planetarium and galleries

The Frost Planetarium seats 250 under a dome tilted at an angle for a near-360-degree view. An Explorer ticket includes one planetarium show, booked onsite on a first-come basis, so claim your slot on arrival. Laser Evenings run monthly. The current special exhibition, The Science Behind Pixar, is included with admission. Other galleries cover flight, the human body and Florida ecosystems, and a rooftop terrace has a telescope deck.
