What's on the board

The fish here arrives whole. The Fish House buys whole fish from local commercial fishermen and a few select vendors, then fillets everything on the premises, which is rarer than it should be in the Keys. The catch changes daily, so the fish you had in mind may not be available. Ask what came in and order that. Stone crab and lobster show up in season from local trappers. The cooking is conch-style, and the menu runs from appetizers and salads through lunch and dinner entrees, a la carte sides, desserts and a wine list.

Bring your own fish

Spent the morning on a boat? The kitchen will cook your catch, which makes this an easy stop before the drive back up to Miami. It's casual and needs no reservations, so you can just show up. The crowd agrees it works: 4.6 from about 6,800 Google reviews, a big number for a seafood spot on the Overseas Highway. Doors open at 11:30 am every day, and it stays open until 10 pm, so a late lunch or an early dinner after a day on the water both fit.

The market counter

Not hungry yet? The seafood market sells fish from the same daily haul, and the staff will pack it up for your trip home. That's the smart play on a Keys day trip: eat lunch here, then carry fillets back to Miami for dinner. The place opened around the time the Conch Republic was declared, and it still runs without much fuss. Hours are the same seven days a week, 11:30 am to 10 pm, so there's no closed day to plan around.
