Good for first-timers who want gear, a quick orientation and hourly top-rope classes, and for regulars who want lead and speed in one building. The trade-off: weekday openings start at 3 pm most days, and the industrial-strip location isn't much to look at.

The walls

Most Miami gyms make you pick bouldering or ropes. Velocity covers it all: bouldering, top-rope and lead routes (the site lists 50-plus sport routes), auto belays for climbing solo, and an Olympic-standard speed wall for racing the clock. Reviewers also mention a Kilter board and a training area. It holds 4.9 from about 1,100 Google reviews, and people keep praising the same two things: friendly staff and route setters who change things up often. A regular can rotate through disciplines without getting bored, and a visitor can try something new without needing a second gym.

Your first climb

Show up with nothing. Shoes, harness and the rest are for rent, and staff give you a short tour, then an orientation for whatever you pick. Bouldering gets a walkthrough of the walls, auto belay gets a quick lesson on the device and harness, and top-rope, which covers the biggest part of the gym, runs classes every hour. Reservations aren't needed for that, but call ahead with a big group if you want shorter waits. Everyone signs a waiver, and doing it online before you arrive saves time at the desk. It's an easy pick for a rainy afternoon with kids or a group of friends.

Passes and hours

A day pass is $30 and covers the whole day. A bouldering-only day pass is also $30 and includes rental shoes, so it's the better deal if ropes don't interest you. With full rental gear, the day pass runs $37.50. Hours are uneven: Monday, Wednesday and Friday open at 3 pm, while Tuesday and Thursday start at 10 am. Saturday runs 9 am to 10 pm, and Sunday closes earlier, at 8 pm. The noon to 3 pm window on Monday, Wednesday and Friday is members only, so don't show up early with a day pass on those days.

Getting there

  1. It's one block from the Earlington Heights Metrorail station, so you can skip the drive.

Good to know
