Haulover in one paragraph

Haulover Park is a 177-acre Miami-Dade County park with 1.4 miles of beachfront, a few miles north of Miami Beach between Bal Harbour and Sunny Isles Beach. Most people search for it because of its clothing-optional beach, but the park also has a regular family beach, a dog beach, a marina with charter boats, a kite shop and a skate park. Brightline's local guide lists it at 10800 Collins Ave.

It is one of only two public beach parks the county runs. The other, Crandon Park on Key Biscayne, has no clothing-optional section, which is why Haulover is the answer when people ask about nude beaches in Miami.

The clothing-optional section

The county marks the clothing-optional beach on the northern third of the shoreline, between lifeguard towers 12 and 16. Park in the North Lot, which is the closest. The county describes it as family-friendly, with chair and umbrella rentals, a food and drink concession and beachfront showers, and restrooms nearby.

Beach ambassadors in green safari hats walk the area and explain the etiquette. If you are not comfortable with nudity, stay south of tower 12: the rest of Haulover is a regular swimsuit beach with the same lifeguards and sand.

Lifeguards, water and the rules

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue guards its two public beaches, Haulover and Crandon, 365 days a year from 8 am to 6 pm. At Haulover the lifeguards watch the water up to 100 yards offshore. This is an ocean beach with real surf on some days, so check the posted conditions at the tower before you swim.

Flotation devices are banned in the bathing areas under the county code, so leave the inflatable at home. Dogs must be leashed everywhere except the dog beach, between lifeguard towers 2 and 3, open daily sunrise to sunset across from the Bark Park. Fishing needs a valid license and is only allowed in the marked areas along Baker's Haulover Cut and the bayside shoreline, never in the swimming zones.
