Nota do editor

We get asked whether August is a mistake. It is not, if you go in knowing the trade. The weather is the hottest of the year and the hurricane odds start to climb in the second half of the month. What you get back is a city that runs deals to fill tables and spa rooms. Book refundable, plan your days around the heat, and August can be good value.

Temperatures and rain are 1991 to 2020 daily normals at Miami International Airport. The heat index line is the weather service's description of a typical summer, not a normal.

The hurricane question

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. The National Hurricane Center says most activity falls between mid-August and mid-October and puts the peak on September 10. So the first half of August is still before the busy stretch; the second half is inside it.

The National Weather Service describes late August to mid-October as the phase of the wet season with the most variable rain, because tropical systems and the first fall fronts can arrive. A storm does not need to be a hurricane to change a trip: a tropical system can bring days of heavy rain and flooding.

Practical steps: choose a refundable rate or travel insurance that covers named storms, follow the National Hurricane Center's outlook from a week out, and look up your hotel's storm surge zone on Miami-Dade County's Know Your Zone map. The county orders evacuations by zone, based on the storm's track and surge, not on its category.
