Worth the drive north for seafood with the Intracoastal in front of you and live music on the dock. The trade-off: downstairs is first come, first served, and the upstairs room only does dinner.

Upstairs or down

There are two restaurants under one roof, and the choice matters. Downstairs is Fisheries Dockside, open daily from 11:30 am to 9:30 pm for lunch, dinner, drinks and live entertainment right on the docks. It's walk-in only, with no exceptions. Upstairs is the dining room, serving dinner nightly from 5 to 9:30 pm in an old-Florida seafood house setting, with nautical decor and windows over the Intracoastal Waterway. That's the one you book. Pick dockside for a long, loose afternoon with a drink from Aqua Bar. Pick upstairs when you want a sit-down evening and the view from above.

Tarpon off the dock

The draw that isn't on the menu is tarpon feeding from the dock, and it's a big part of why this place pulls families as well as the cocktail crowd. The restaurant sits on a point just north of the 17th Street bridge, close to Port Everglades and the inlet to the Atlantic, so there's boat traffic to watch the whole time. The site runs a live dock cam if you want to check the scene before leaving Miami. It holds a 4.5 from about 6,800 Google reviews, which is a lot of people agreeing on a waterfront spot.

Getting there from Miami

Treat it as a day trip. By car, take I-95 north, then I-595 east to US-1 (Federal Highway). Go north on US-1 for 1.5 miles, turn right on SE 15th Street and follow it to the end. The restaurant is inside Lauderdale Marina. You can also arrive by boat, or ride the Fort Lauderdale Water Taxi, which stops right here. The water taxi turns lunch into an outing. The site doesn't say anything about parking, so check before you go.

Como chegar

  1. The Fort Lauderdale Water Taxi stops here at stop #3.

Bom saber

Upstairs opens at 5 pm for dinner only. Before then, everything happens downstairs on the dock.
