For early breakfasts, big Cuban sandwiches and party trays in Hialeah. It's a neighborhood counter bakery, not a place to linger, and prices aren't posted online, so call ahead for cakes.

The Croqueta Cake and the cake list

The Croqueta Cake is what Breadman is known for, a specialty cake built around ham croquettes, and it's why a lot of people find this place. The cake list goes further than that: Jack Daniels, Flan, Coco Flameado, Bombom, Cappuchino, Oreo, Lemon Coco and a Naked Cake. Pastelitos and pan Cubano are the everyday business, and the bakery says everything is baked fresh daily. Prices aren't published online, so call this branch before you count on a specialty cake for a specific date. A 4.5 from about 630 Google reviews suggests the neighborhood keeps coming back.

Sandwiches that need two hands

The sandwich board goes well past the Cuban and the media noche. El Guapo stacks two steaks, four house croquetas, two fried eggs, Swiss and papitas on Cuban bread. The Guajiro is a frita on brioche with tostones and sweet plantains. Rico Suave handles breakfast with serrano ham, bacon, fried eggs and cream cheese. There's also a breakfast special with two eggs, fries and an 8 oz café con leche. Shakes include mamey, trigo and malteada, plus a Sweet Box batido that turns any dessert into a shake. Several sandwiches are cooked to order, so expect a short wait.

Feeding a party

Catering is the other half of the operation. Party packages pair a cake sized for 20, 30, 50 or 100 people with pastelitos, ham croquettes and bocaditos de pasta; the 100-person deal includes 150 pastelitos. Add-ons come in batches of 25: tequeños with cheese, guava and ham or Nutella, ropa vieja empanadas, papas rellenas, mini señoritas. Imperial rice and tortilla española round it out. This branch on West 20th Avenue opens at 5:30 am Monday through Saturday and closes at 7 pm. Sunday runs 7 am to 4 pm, which matters if you're picking up for an evening party.
