Good for a date or a small group that wants serious cocktails and real food after 9:30 pm. Drinks are $16 outside happy hour, and the soundtrack is a DJ, not a band.
What to drink
The cocktail list leans Argentine and Italian, and the Fernandito gives it away: Fernet Branca, black cherry cola and saline, a riff on the Buenos Aires bar staple. The Matecito Highball works yerba mate into gin and grapefruit, and the Tango Sour is pisco with lavender and egg white. Signatures run $16. Happy hour is daily from 6 to 8 pm with $9 cocktails, which is the move if you're early. Several drinks come in a mocktail version, including the Matecito, the Clerico and the Miguel Pepe, so the sober friend isn't stuck with soda water.
Pinsa after 9:30
The kitchen belongs to Battubelin, the Italian restaurant out front. From 6 to 9:30 pm it's aperitivo food: a $10 plate of bocconcini and focaccia, burrata for $16, a $17 tagliere of prosciutto, salame and cheese, and a fritura mista of calamari, shrimp and veggies. At 9:30 it switches to late-night pinsa and pasta until midnight. Pinsas run $15 to $20, from marinara up to the Battubelin. Pasta is $24 with your pick of shape and sauce, cacio e pepe to amatriciana. Tiramisu is $7. That's dinner, not bar snacks.
The patio and the door
Conventillo is named for the communal boarding houses of old Buenos Aires, where daily life happened in the shared courtyard, and the patio here plays the same role. Expect DJ sets rather than live bands. Groups of five or fewer just walk in. Six or more can reserve, which is worth doing on a Friday or Saturday, when it stays open until 2 am. Weeknights it closes at 1 am, and it's closed Sundays. A 4.9 from about 320 Google reviews is a strong showing for a place this intimate.
