Best for couples and planners who want a wedding venue with real Coral Gables history, and locals after a pool-and-gym membership. The trade-off: it's mostly a members-and-bookings place, so casual drop-ins have the café and not much else.

The building

George Merrick, the founder of Coral Gables, built this clubhouse in 1922, and it was the city's first public building. It was restored and reopened for its centennial, and the City of Coral Gables runs it now. That history is the selling point. The named rooms carry it through: the Coral Grand Ballroom, the Atrium Room, the Fountain Room, the Merrick Room and the outdoor Granada Garden. It sits on Alhambra Circle near the Granada Golf Course, which is part of the same athletic setup. Pool, gym and courts

The athletic club is membership-based: a pool, a fitness center, group fitness classes and personal training.
