For a group of up to six who want the boat to themselves and a captain who fishes tournaments. The trade-off: there are no shared seats, so a solo angler or couple pays for the whole charter.

The boat and the captain

Sea Cross runs two air-conditioned boats from slips 01 and 02 at Haulover, the inlet marina just north of Miami Beach proper. Haulover's selling point is the short ride: the reef and Gulf Stream are close, so less of your paid time goes to cruising. Captain Rafael Mayans, who goes by Ralph, is Miami-born, Coast Guard certified and an IGFA member, with placings in Bimini Big Game Club tournaments. His crew also posts regular fishing reports, which help you see what's biting before you book. Reviews land at 4.8 from about 260 Google reviews, and the crew gets named a lot.

What's biting offshore

Targets are the Gulf Stream regulars: sailfish, mahi-mahi, tuna, wahoo and the occasional marlin. Recent reports point to sailfish on the reef with live goggle eyes, mahi showing up in fall, and summer bringing bonita, wahoo and blackfin tuna around 20 pounds. You can ask to target one species, and departure and return times can be adjusted. Trips come as half days, three-quarter days, full days, and evening runs in summer. You keep your catch, and if something deserves the wall, the mate can handle mounting from start to finish.

Packing for the day

Rods, reels, bait, tackle, ice and fishing licenses are covered, so leave your gear at home. Bring what the crew suggests: a hat or visor, sunglasses, sunscreen and a light jacket, since the breeze offshore cools faster than you'd expect. Food and drinks are on you; they supply coolers and ice for anything perishable. The boats are pitched as family friendly, with crew who keep kids involved in the fishing. Tipping is the usual charter math, 15 to 20 percent for good service, so plan for that on top of the fare.
