For anyone who wants to see how big the Everglades really is, in one look. The trade-off: it's a long way from the city for a single viewpoint, so pair it with the trail, a bike or the tram.

The view from 70 feet

Seventy feet doesn't sound like much until you remember the Everglades is about as flat as land gets. The National Park Service calls this the highest elevation a visitor can reach by foot anywhere in the park, and the panorama runs up to 20 miles on a clear day. That's the whole point of the trip: from up here the landscape stops being a wall of green and turns into a pattern you can actually read. It's also tagged for birding, so bring binoculars. Visitors rate it 4.7 from about 1,900 Google reviews, which is high for what is, technically, a concrete lookout.

Bike, tram or boots

The tower sits on Shark Valley Loop Road, and the park lists the spot as a trailhead with a bike rack. Its own tags cover hiking, bicycles and the tram, which tells you how people get here: under their own power or on a ride along the loop. We don't have the loop distance or tram schedule in our sources, so check the park's current details before you commit, especially in summer heat. Plan for sun and wind exposure either way. There's not much between you and the sky out here, and that's the appeal.

Water, restrooms and access

The basics are covered, which matters this far out. The site lists flush toilets, a family restroom, drinking water and a bottle-filling station, plus recycling and trash bins, an information kiosk and interpretive exhibits. It's also listed as wheelchair accessible. If you have a permanent disability and are a US citizen or permanent resident, the federal Access Pass is free for life and covers entrance at national parks that charge a fee. Refill your bottle before heading back out, because the next tap may be a while.

Como chegar

  1. There's a bike rack at the tower if you ride the loop instead of walking or taking the tram.
