For anyone who cares about Miami's civil rights history or saw One Night in Miami. The story is the draw; the trade-off is a guided-tour-only format with three set start times, so you plan around them.
Ali's ice cream and Dr. King's swim
The two-story, fifty-room modernist motel was where Black travelers stayed when Jim Crow kept them off Miami Beach. After beating Sonny Liston in 1964, Muhammad Ali came here to celebrate with Malcolm X, Jim Brown and Sam Cooke, the night retold in One Night in Miami. Dr. King swam in the pool and gave an early version of his I Have a Dream speech here in 1960. Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole came by after their Beach shows. It closed in 1976, sat empty for 26 years, nearly got demolished in 2002, and came back after a $6 million restoration.
The 45-minute tour
Entry is by guided tour only, and each one runs 45 minutes. The museum's own visit page lists starts Wednesday through Sunday at 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm, and they begin promptly, so show up a few minutes early. You pick a timed slot when you buy your general admission ticket online, and pre-booking is how you guarantee a spot. Payment is credit card only, online or in person. It holds 4.8 from about 270 Google reviews, a strong score for a small museum. The galleries also host music and art programs, so the events page is worth a look.
