Коротко

  • Shops in Miami: 7%: Florida's 6% plus Miami-Dade's 1% surtax, added at the register.
  • Miami Beach restaurants: 9%: the 7% plus the city's 2% resort tax on food and drinks.
  • Hotel rooms in Miami: 13% outside Miami Beach, Bal Harbour and Surfside.
  • Refund for tourists: None; a sale to a buyer in the store counts as delivered in Florida.
  • Nearby counties: Broward 7%, the Keys 7.5%, Palm Beach 6.5% in 2026.

Budget 7% on top of every price tag in Miami, more on rooms and Miami Beach meals, and do not plan on getting any of it back: Florida has no tax refund for visitors, and the only legal way around the tax is having the store ship the item out of state.

How Florida sales tax works

Florida's general sales tax is 6%, and the Florida Department of Revenue says every sale, admission, storage or rental in the state is taxable unless the law exempts it. On top of that, most counties add a discretionary sales surtax, charged at the rate of the county where the item is delivered. In Miami-Dade that surtax is 1%, so the rate on a pair of sneakers in Brickell, a phone on Lincoln Road or a bag at Dolphin Mall is 7%.

Prices in US stores are shown before tax. The tax is added at the register, so a $100 price tag becomes $107 in Miami-Dade. There is no separate tourist rate and no exemption for visitors from other states or countries.

The county surtax applies only to the first $5,000 of a single item. The Department of Revenue's own example for a 1% county such as Miami-Dade: on a $7,000 item, $420 state tax plus $50 surtax, $470 in total.

Why there is no tax refund for tourists

Unlike a European VAT, Florida sales tax has no refund desk at the airport and no tax-free shopping form for foreign visitors. Florida law presumes that every retail sale made to a person physically present at the time of sale was delivered in Florida, and a sale delivered in Florida is taxed.

The one route the law gives you is export: goods count as exported when the seller hands them to a common carrier or forwarding agent for shipment out of the state, or mails them out of Florida. In practice that means asking the store to ship your purchase home. Shipping costs money and not every store offers it, so it only makes sense on an expensive item.

The sales tax holiday running now

Florida's 2026 Hunting, Fishing and Camping Sales Tax Holiday runs from September 1 to December 31, 2026. During it, no sales tax is due on items such as tents priced $200 or less, sleeping bags, camping stoves, portable hammocks and collapsible camping chairs at $50 or less, and camping lanterns and flashlights at $30 or less.

For fishing, rods and reels qualify at $75 or less each, or $150 or less sold as a set; tackle boxes and bags at $30 or less; and bait and tackle at $10 or less each, or $20 or less sold together. The holiday does not cover rentals or purchases for commercial use.

  • Groceries for home are tax-free; hot food and deli meals are not
  • Keep receipts only for your own records and customs; there is nothing to claim back at MIA
