Best for history-minded visitors and groups who want Overtown's story from the people preserving it. The trade-off: shows are booked one at a time, so there's no nightly lineup to count on.

What's on the bill

Shows here are booked event by event, not on a nightly schedule. The next one listed is Swerve's Grits & Eggs Podcast: Coming Thru America Tour with Deante Kyle on Saturday, February 6, 2027. Expect comedy and unfiltered conversation from an Atlanta podcaster with a big social following. The foundation also runs a series called Vibes from the Vault, and the theater is available for rentals, so the calendar shifts with whoever books it. Tickets go through the event listing on the foundation's site. Check it before you plan a night around the place.

The archive side

The Lyric is run by the Black Archives History & Research Foundation of South Florida, which looks after three historic properties in Overtown. For many visitors, that's the bigger draw. The foundation offers group tours, research access and paid student internships, plus a digital archive you can browse from home. Its featured collection is The Miami Times, South Florida's African-American newspaper, founded in 1923 by Bahamian immigrant Henry E. Sigismund Reeves. The building also received an official historic marker, coordinated with the Florida Department of State, the City of Miami and the local redevelopment agency.

Daytime hours

It's open Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm, and closed Sunday. Evening shows run on their own schedule, separate from those hours. The theater sits at 819 NW 2nd Ave in Overtown, just north of downtown. It rates 4.6 from about 370 Google reviews, which is solid for a venue judged partly on whatever happened to be playing. For a group tour or a research visit, call ahead at 786-708-4610. The site lists tours and research as arranged programs, so a quick call saves you a wasted trip.
