Disco Donkey: Smash Burgers

A Downtown smash burger counter that runs Black Angus patties through Thai, Venezuelan and truffle toppings, open late every night.

For a cheap, messy, late burger in Downtown with more ideas than most. The trade-off: the fun toppings push prices toward $15, and the plain Classic is the real bargain.

The burger to order

The Truffle Shroom Smash ($15) is the one reviewers keep naming: a Black Angus smash patty, braised shimeji mushrooms, Fontina, thyme aioli and a parmesan-truffle-yuzu foam that tends to run out of the bun. If that sounds like a lot, the Classic Smash is $9.50 with cheddar, grilled negi, house-brined pickles and disco sauce. The Tuk Thai Smash ($14) comes with Tom Kha soup for dipping, which is the strangest thing on the menu and probably the most fun. A double patty is $4 more, and an Impossible vegan patty swaps in for $2.

Beyond the bun

Chicken thighs get a 24-hour buttermilk brine, then go Venezuelan on the Caracas Chick ($16) with Reina Pepeada avocado salad, or hot on the Hot Chick ($14) with a Nashville-to-Aleppo hot honey. Fries start at $4.50 plain. The Donkey Fries ($9) pile on cheddar, Fontina, bacon and pickled onions, enough to split. For something sweet and salty, the bacon-wrapped plantains stuffed with chorizo and goat cheese run $15 for four, with key lime pie aioli and guava BBQ. There's also a cup of Tom Kha soup for $8 if you want it on its own.

After midnight

Hours run 11 am to midnight Sunday through Wednesday and stretch to 1 am Thursday through Saturday, which makes this one of the easier Downtown stops after a game or a night out on SE 1st Street. The rating is 4.9 from about 560 Google reviews, and the ones the restaurant quotes mention food arriving in around ten minutes even when it's packed, loud music, and staff who take Polaroids. It's a $ spot, casual and kid friendly by day. Pickup and delivery go through DoorDash and Uber Eats if you'd rather eat at home.
