Flamingo Gardens suits kids from toddlers to about 10 who like animals and a slow pace; the trade-off is that it is in Davie in Broward County, about 45 minutes or more from downtown Miami, and no outside food is allowed.

Why you go

Flamingo Gardens is a botanical garden and wildlife sanctuary that houses rescued Florida animals that cannot return to the wild. Kids walk past the flamingo pond, otters, Florida panthers, black bears, alligators and a walk-through bird aviary, then ride the narrated tram through the grounds. It rates 4.7 from 8,644 Google reviews. A visit takes two to three hours. Many paths are shaded by old trees, which helps on hot days.

When to go

Google lists it open every day from 9:30 am to 5 pm, and the site says last entry is at 4 pm and the last tram leaves at 4 pm. Arrive at opening in summer, when animals are more active and the heat is lower. It is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Weekends and school holidays are busier, especially around the tram. Much of it is outdoors, so check the radar on a rainy day.

Know before you go

The site lists general admission at $24 for adults 12 and up and $17 for kids 3 to 11, with 2 and under free. The tram price is not listed, so check current prices on their site. The policies page says no outside food or coolers, and no pets except trained service animals. It is in Davie, Broward County, a drive of about 45 minutes or more from downtown Miami depending on traffic. Bring bug spray, hats and water bottles.
