South Beach is the beach to see on a first trip to Miami, with wide sand, clear water and Ocean Drive behind it; the trade-off is crowds, noise and expensive parking and food nearby.

Why you go

You come for the classic Miami picture. The beach is wide and public, with the painted lifeguard towers, turquoise water and the Art Deco hotels of Ocean Drive just behind the dunes and Lummus Park. There is always something going on: volleyball, music, people watching. It rates 4.7 from more than 2,200 Google reviews for the beach itself, on top of the many reviews for the streets behind it.

When to go

Early morning is the calmest and best for photos, with soft light on the towers and almost nobody on the sand. From late morning on weekends and in winter high season it gets crowded. Spring break in March is the loudest time of the year. The sun sets behind the city, so evening is better for a walk on the sand than a sunset view. Our data has no posted hours.

Know before you go

Parking is metered on the streets and in city garages, and it is expensive and hard on weekends, so walk from your hotel or take a rideshare. Lifeguard towers are staffed during the day; swim near one. Chair and umbrella rentals are on the sand, and food is on Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue. For a quieter version, walk south to South Pointe Park or go north to Mid Beach.
