For history fans and walkers on the Brickell waterfront who want a quiet, free stop with a long backstory. The circle itself is buried, so the payoff is the signage, the setting and the view.

What is under the grass

Twenty-four holes cut into the limestone bedrock form a ring about 38 feet across, found in 1998 when an apartment complex on the site was torn down. Charcoal from the site dated to roughly 1,800 to 2,000 years old, though some scholars question whether the circle is as old as the wood. To protect it, the circle has been reburied, so you are looking at a park, not an excavation. It became a National Historic Landmark in 2009.

River mouth views

Water on two sides is the reason it sits in our views list: the 2.2-acre park looks out where the Miami River meets Biscayne Bay, with the Brickell and Downtown towers rising around it. HistoryMiami opened the park in 2011 and placed interpretive panels across it, and an audio tour adds the backstory. It is free and open 24 hours. Rated 4.6 from about 500 Google reviews.

Next door, Brickell Park

Just south, at 501 Brickell Avenue, Brickell Park adds shade the Circle lacks, with big oaks and gumbo limbo trees. The Brickell family mausoleum there dates from 1924, though the family burials were later moved. Older Tequesta burials also lie under the park, and researchers think they may belong to the same village as the Circle. Walk both for a short, free history loop.
