Good for a quiet, free hour between downtown and the beach, or a festival Sunday with Taiko drums and tea. It's compact and daytime only, so pair it with something else rather than making it the whole outing.

An hour by the pond

Ichimura Miami-Japan Garden sits on Watson Island, just off the MacArthur Causeway beside Jungle Island. It's free and open every day from 9 am to 5 pm. The garden is compact: a pond, plantings, a stone lantern, and a kind of quiet you won't find a mile east on South Beach. It holds a 4.4 from about 900 Google reviews, which fits a place that does one small thing calmly. Budget an hour, not an afternoon. Go in the morning if you want it mostly to yourself, and plan something else on the island or downtown for the rest of the day.

A garden that moved

The current garden opened in 2005. Its predecessor, San-Ai-En, or Three Loves Garden, closed in 1997 when the City of Miami leased the land to Parrot Jungle for what became Jungle Island, with a promise to rebuild nearby. The Friends group, a volunteer nonprofit since 1984, has been adding authentic pieces ever since. The first was a stone lantern brought from Japan, which they call the only perfect one in the garden. A teahouse is still on their wish list, so don't expect to find one yet. Volunteers do real work here, from weeding to fundraising, and they're always recruiting.

Festival Sundays

The Friends throw a free festival three times a year. The next one is November 1, 2026, from 10:30 am to 4 pm. The winter and spring editions fall in early February and early May. Expect Taiko drumming from Yoshiko Taiko Dojo, a regular at every event, plus food and vendor tents. It runs rain or shine and it's cash only, so bring small bills. The paid extras are the draw: a sushi sample plate, an onigiri class, ikebana, a 15-minute yukata photo session, and a tea ceremony capped at 25 people per seating, with masks required.
