Worth a walk on your first Miami trip for the Deco architecture and the people-watching. The trade-off: it's crowded, loud and built for tourists, so look, don't linger at every table.

The walk

Ocean Drive is a street, not a venue, so the best way to do it is on foot. The Art Deco buildings line one side and the beach sits across the road on the other, which means you can walk the strip and cut over to the sand whenever you want. It holds a 4.8 from about 330 Google reviews, mostly from people who came for exactly this: pastel facades, a sea breeze and a lot to look at. Bring water and sunscreen in the daytime, because shade is limited.

Day versus night

Daytime is for the architecture. The colors read best in bright light, and photos come out cleaner before the sidewalks fill up. After dark the strip turns into a different place: neon on the facades, music spilling out of open fronts, and a steady crowd that thickens on weekends. Pick daytime if you want to actually see the buildings, and night if you want the noise and the scene. Doing both, a few hours apart, is the move on a first visit.

The catch

This is the most touristed stretch in Miami, and it shows. Sidewalk tables sit right on the walking path, and hosts will try to wave you in as you pass. Read the menu and the prices before you sit, not after the drink arrives. Crowds can make the sidewalk slow on busy nights, so keep your phone and wallet close. None of that is a reason to skip it. Just treat Ocean Drive as a place to stroll and look, and be choosier about where you spend money.
