Good for a Latin lunch or early dinner with rum cocktails by the canal, rated 4.7 from about 300 Google reviews. The trade-off: it closes by 10 pm and shuts entirely Sunday and Monday.

What to order

Fish dip nachos ($14), smoked fish over plantain and yuca chips, are the snack to start with, then a Ropa Vieja empanada ($9) or the Reina Pepiada croquettes ($12). The menu is tapas-style and Latin across the board, from tuna ceviche in coconut leche de tigre ($15) to shrimp over yuca mofongo ($30). Bigger appetites go for the 8oz grass-fed churrasco ($42) or the 18oz ribeye for two ($85). The Champions Chicken ($24) is named for Muhammad Ali's 1964 heavyweight title win. There's a vegan flatbread and other plant-based options, so a mixed table works fine.

The canal terrace

Canal-side tables run year-round on the terrace, and that's the seat to ask for. Inside, the building is a century-old landmark the restaurant plays as a neighborhood speakeasy, with a bar leaning hard on rum alongside craft cocktails and wine by the glass or bottle. There's a happy hour menu too; check the current times before you plan around it. Google files it as a live music spot, but the site doesn't post a schedule, so call ahead at 786-423-1859 if music is the point of your night.

Short hours, big back room

Doors open at noon Tuesday and Wednesday and close at 9 pm, stretching to 10 pm Thursday and Friday. Saturday runs 4 to 10 pm, and it's closed Sunday and Monday, which catches people out. That makes it a better lunch or early dinner than a late night. It's an easy pick if you're already at the Convention Center. Next door, Venu is the private event room: up to 100 guests, its own open terrace, and custom menus or cocktails if you're planning a party.
