Good for families chasing weekday kids' theater and anyone who wants Black theater from Florida's longest-running African American company. The trade-off: the calendar is a mix, so check what's on before you go.
Two companies, one stage
M Ensemble, Florida's longest-running African American theater company, is the resident troupe here and stages its main-stage season in this room. It has won multiple Carbonell Awards and has a reputation for bold programming. The building is run by Fantasy Theatre Factory, founded in 1982 and best known for theater for young audiences, so the calendar swings between serious drama and morning kids' shows. On Oct 31 at 11:30 am, for instance, it's Little Monster Tales. It's a Miami-Dade County cultural facility named for Chief Sandrell Rivers, an artist and arts advocate who worked for the county. Check the calendar first, because the mix changes from week to week.
Getting a good seat
The main room is a black box that seats 200 at most in proscenium setup, so even the back rows sit fairly close to the stage. The theater lists assisted listening devices, surround sound, a laser video projector and up-to-date lighting. Google reviewers give it 4.8 from about 210 reviews, a strong score for a community venue. The listed hours, 9 am to 6 pm on weekdays and closed on weekends, read like office hours rather than showtimes. Go by the ticket listing for when the curtain actually goes up, and don't assume a Saturday show is off just because the office is closed.
Renting the space
Plenty of the building's use happens off the main stage. The studio theater is large and bright, with sprung flooring built for dance, and works for rehearsals, cocktail receptions and small performances. The multipurpose room is set up for meetings, seminars and classes, with a projector, podium, network access, microphones and several media inputs. The black box itself is also available to rent. Rentals go through Fantasy Theatre Factory's office, which keeps weekday hours, so call between 9 am and 6 pm Monday through Friday rather than hoping for a weekend reply.
