Good for visitors who want an easy boat out to the reef, a BYOB sandbar afternoon, or a serious path to certification. The trade-off: it's a big, full-service operation, so you book ahead, sign waivers and show up on time.
Dive trips and the glass-bottom boat
Scuba trips leave Fort Lauderdale daily for reefs and wrecks a short ride off the beach. Snorkelers go out on a glass-bottom boat, which helps if someone in your group wants to see the reef without getting in. The shop sits in a resort hotel marina on SE 17th Street, and it says it's the only dive operation in South Florida set up that way, so if you're staying there, the boat is a walk from your room. The water stays warm all year. Fill out the dive or snorkel waiver online before you show up and you'll spend less time at the counter.
The sandbar party boat
Not a diver? The two-hour Sandbar Party and Swim Cruise passes yachts and waterfront mansions, then stops at the sandbar for swimming and lounging. It's BYOB: bring your own food and drinks, but no glass. A calmer Sunset Cruise runs too, with the same Coast Guard licensed captains. Plan to arrive at least 20 minutes before departure. Prices weren't shown on the pages we checked, so look at the departures and prices page when you book rather than assuming.
Getting certified
The dive shop is a PADI 5 Star Career Development Center, and the course list runs from Open Water through instructor training. You can knock out the theory with PADI eLearning at home and save the pool and ocean time for your trip. Rusty divers can take a refresher before heading out. For people who want to make a job of it, there's a multi-phase career program with student housing, job placement help and a veterans track. The shop counter, open 8 am to 6 pm every day, handles gear, tank fills and service, and it's staffed by PADI pros.
